Hi, my name is Kathy and I'm fat! I haven't always been this way. It seems that having babies in your 30's really screws up your metabolism. (this is the excuse that I like to use!) I used to be very thin, but even then I thought I was fat! Go figure. Anyway, I am hoping to lose about 45 lbs in 2006, even if it kills me!
I'm all for supporting each other!!! Enjoying The Spa, sipping on a cocktail...

Hello, I'm Erda, and I have about 10 pounds to lose. I could lose it easily if I didn't have to shadow my nine year old continously. I usually gain aobut 3 pounds over the period from Thanksgiving to January 1, so some of this was left over from a gradual gain related to stress eating.

Hi, my name is Teach and I have been with the Weight Watchers Program since October 20 and have lost 14 pounds. My goal is 25. I LOVE Weight Watchers. For the first time I don't feel like I am "dieting", just eating healthy and making better choices. I didn't have to give up my social drinking on the weekends either! I have points built in for that pleasure. I have gotten back into walking again and that makes me feel good.
I have to weigh in again tomorrow and will be happy to have maintained over Christmas week and am not looking for a loss. My best girlfriend and I joined together and she is losing weight much faster, but she is 10 years younger and that makes a HUGE difference! I like this thread. Thanks Heidi! |

Can you really lose weight by doing Yoga? And can someone who isn't very limber do yoga? And if you can lose weight by doing yoga, doesn't that kinda contraidict what all those other weight loss programs say about getting your heart rate up to shed the pounds? So many questions, I'm out of breath!

Re: The Official Weight-Loss Thread

losing weight for a LIFETIME and maintaining is a LIFESTYLE choice...yoga and pilates do not necessarily burn a whole lot of calories but they help to speed up your (edit) metabolism by increasing muscle, blood flow to vital organs, mobility and energy. i never use a scale as it is more important to be physically fit than lightweight because FAT weighs less than MUSCLE so sometimes the scale is very misleading. you can be a fat person (higher percentage of fat) and weigh less than me but i'll be a size 6 while you're a size 12...its the truth because fat takes up more space than lean muscle.
anyhow statistics show that through the years as you get older and your metabolism slows you put on so many pounds of FAT (this doesn't include muscle gain) - well those same stats show that people who do yoga at least 2 times a week tend to NOT gain those pounds of fat but lose fat. couple it with something like kickboxing which can burn about 400 cals in 45 minutes and yoo hoo, you got metabolism in high gear. now to make it all work, you've got to eat just regular - no special diet you can do the 40/30/30 or whatever and still come out a winner. no you do not have to be a pretzel - go to yogajournal.com and look up the sun salutation and work up to 12 of those rotations a day until you are ready to move on. |

I am Sandy, and I have been fat all my life or at least since I had babies, so about 35 years anyways.
I joined a Fitness group called Truestar in September and have lost 30 lbs so far, so I am half way to my goal I hope!!! This program is a Lifestyle change and uses many concepts...herbal, zone,Atkins and weight training. When I started I could not do 3 minutes on the bike and now I am peddaling at a Level 3 25-30 minutes 5x a week and circuit training 3x. I have virtually no clothes left and I hate shopping alone for them so poor old hubby gets to tag along...kicking and screaming all the way I might add! Good Luck everyone!!! ~~Daq lives forever in my heart~~

Thank you, Heidi for creating this sticky thread so we can record our weight-loss trials and tribulations (as well as our successes, which I hope outnumbers all the trials 99 to 1!!
)I've always struggled with my weight even as a child, but I've always been able to dodge being a "fat" adult until I broke my leg 3 years ago (see my diary at www.mybrokenleg.com/kathy if you wish to read my long story). I gained quite a bit of weight with being unable to walk, drive, etc. for over 4 months!!! I've been able to shed some of the weight since I am exercising regularly (I have a treadmill and stationary bike, plus I am also doing calesthenics and lifting weights). The last 10-15 lbs. have been the hardest to get off, and part of the problem is I just LOVE TO EAT!!! If I could just control my appetite, I may be able to shed these last few pounds. Fortunately, this year I haven't gained any significant weight, and have hovered at around 160 for the past year or so.I have basically lain low during the holidays, but once the kids start back to school January 10th, I will be in earnest getting back on task. Anyhow, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!! "You can't change what you don't acknowledge." -- Dr. Phil

Re: The Official Weight-Loss Thread
love the topic! great suggestion. Hi, I'm Dar and I'm hovering around 160 now for months. Last May, I'd finally had enough and lost a total of 21lbs since then. I can't seem to get below 160, but I'll die trying! My entire family is big, and I mean obese people. It has always been my biggest fear that I would end up obese, so much so that I developed eating disorders as a teenager. After my daughter, I could never seem to lose the baby fat. Most recently, I've had a complete physical, including having my thyroid checked. My hubby has been great and is helping with weight training. I've considered joining the online weighwatchers but have never taken the plunge. Smile - It's free therapy

Hi I am Andria - I am not overweight, but have been when I was younger. I am 35 now and probably could drop about 5 pounds, but I think if I start working out again the toning would bring it all back together!
Good luck to everyone who is working to lose!! We are here to support you!!!! "GO CAROLINA PANTHERS 10-4 SO FAR - #17 ROCKS!"

Oh Soapgranny, yes it does - you neverknow how much you eat unless you write it down...your mind plays tricks on you and you think you are eating less than you are. Its not until you start adding it up that you realize what kind of habits you have.

Re: The Official Weight-Loss Thread

Logging your eating, or counting points is the whole principle behind the weight watchers program and it is why it is so successful in my opinion. I didn't realize what I was eating until I started keeping track. Those "tastes" and "small bites" of food DO ADD UP!
I weighed in yesterday and I was down 1/2 pound! I was happy with that considering I wasn't very careful over the Christmas holidays. |

Re: The Official Weight-Loss Thread

ANOTHER principle of dieting came from Weight Watchers - different tastes - its this thing where in yoga you are identified by your type...whether you like sour, sweet, salty you know tastes. well in this diet (forgot what its called) you must stick to one kind of taste per day. for instance if you are having sour then just eat sour foods like yogure, granny smith apples, etc. this keeps you from overeating. the theory is that when you let yourself get into the habit of eating lots of different tastes in one sitting - one day - your search for satisfaction leads you to too many items.

Katgirl and SG, I love your suggestions!!
I plan on going to Self.com and signing up for the online diary thing Katgirl mentioned. I think that writing down what I eat will help me keep track of things much better, because I'm sure that I am eating a lot more than I can remember...At any rate, I was so motivated by this thread that I did do some walking yesterday as well as some exercises and weight lifting. I just need to get through this weekend with all the partying we will be doing and all the snacks/drinks that will be available. If I can make it through this weekend, it will be a huge hurdle to overcome. Have a great new years everyone, and try not to indulge too much, but have fun !! 4 days and counting! I feel like it's the last supper! When you have a diet start date looming over your head (January 3rd), you tend to eat every meal like it's your last. I've probably gained 5 pounds in the last week alone!
I'm nervous girls! I want so badly to lose weight, but don't know if the will power will be there. You see....I'm a cheater. OMG! There! I've said it. I cheat on Weight Watchers! Help me! I"m weak!!! Enjoying The Spa, sipping on a cocktail...

You are only cheating yourself Kathy.5 lb up is 10 to lose to be 5 down remember that it doubles with every lb gained! You CAN do it Kathy.

Re: The Official Weight-Loss Thread

Kathy, I was a cheater too, but if you really take weight watchers seriously and record every darn thing you put in your mouth, you will get immediate results and THAT is what gives you the detrmination to go on. I also found that I do best with a buddy.....a ww buddy and an exercise buddy. We don't let each other wimp out on walking or skip a weigh in session. There is something about having to weigh in every week that really keeps me on track. I am losing steay, between 1-2 pounds a week, but it feels great! I am also toning more. Being over 45 really hit me hard. I wasn't "fat", I just felt dumpy. You can do it!!!!! PLEASE don't cheat, I promise if you give it an honest try you WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!!

I'll tell you something
|
those people I had sign on to the self log said it was such a painstaking task that they lost weight just cuz they didn't want to eat something and then have to record it.
if you can't log on at Self.com then make up an excel spreadsheet and tabulate daily: Fat, Protein, Calories, Fiber grams intake. during the holidays at my studio we started the Baron Baptiste detoxifying ritual (i modified it a little cuz i don't believe in "detoxifying" per se). First 3 days we eat: protein and grain for breakfast, yogurt for snack, protein and veggies and grain for lunch, fruit for snack and then protein and veggies for dinner. START EACH DAY WITH HOT WATER AND LEMON DURING THE WHOLE 9 DAYS (gets the enzymes released) then Second 3 days we eat all fruit and all that you want whenever you get hungry (remember that zucchini and tomatoes and some other things are also considered fruits) and then you go back to the First 3 days that you started with. During these days we do nothing but power yoga for exercise with lots of twisting. LMAO - the first three days everybody was complaining about how much they went to the bathroom well when the second set of 3 days set in they were really beyotching about the bloating and the toilet but in the last 3 days these people got nothing but results - they felt a lot lighter, purer and had the will of steel. yesterday was the first day of everybody going back to "normal" and there were no complaints in fact this morning everyone remarked that it was now easier not to overeat and to eat the right things. Now on average about 10 lbs were lost during the 9 days but I explained that was mostly water and that the true weight loss was probably around a more acceptable and healthy 3 lbs. The thing is they all liked getting what they felt was a headstart and by doing the 9 days with such discipline and doing the "wringing" and "pressing" using yoga made such a big difference where they needed it most....in their minds. BTW, 12 women and 2 men did it. Even the 4 people who admitted to really bad "cheating" got a lot out of it. |
