12,000 today. It hit 14,198 back in October last year. Yeah, it's dropped over 1,200 points in nine months. Who knows if this is the bottom?

The DJIA stands for Dow Jones Industrial Average, and it is a marker of thirty stocks from various industries that are supposed to be bellweather stocks or
indicators of how the market is progressing. Other items to look at would be the number of "Advancers" versus "Decliners" (or advances
versus declines) to see how many went up or down with the DOW. They change the composition from time to time, such and when they pulled steel out of the Dow
and replaced it with a tech stock. You can see how diverse the DOW isin the second list.
Here's info from a site about the original 12 stocks: American Cotton Oil American Sugar American Tobacco Chicago Gas Distilling and Cattle Feeding General Electric Laclede Gas National Lead Tennessee Coal & Iron North American U.S. Leather U.S. Rubber DJIA now: Alcoa Altria Group American Express AT&T Boeing Caterpillar Citigroup Coca-Cola Disney DuPont Eastman Kodak ExxonMobil General Electric General Motors Hewlett-Packard Home Depot Honeywell Intel IBM International Paper Johnson & Johnson J.P. Morgan Chase McDonald's Merck Microsoft 3M Procter & Gamble SBC Communications United Technologies Wal-Mart There are other ways to look at the stock market as a whole. Too many for this post!

BTW, the DJIA rose a little again today.
Oil analysts were testifying to Congress yesterday about oil speculators driving up the cost of oil. One analyst said that if Congress took the action they recommended, they believe oil prces would drop by 50% in a month. Another person said, though that the speculators would go outside of US trading infrastructure to do the same thing. Don't relaly know for sure who is right on this, but it seems to me that setting down some rules and closing the ENRON loophole could make a big difference.
