Emily's in the newspaper! |

On Father's Day, Emily was in another horseback riding show. There was a photographer from the local paper there and she zoned right in on Emily. The
Saturday competition was for Special Olympics and sunday was for those with physical challenges only, which is when Emily competed. She won 3- 1st place
ribbons and 1- 2nd place ribbon. To top it off, she won champion of her group. Her group consisted of only 3 kids, but who's counting? Champion means she
scored higher on all events in her group than the others. It was a small competition, but that's just what Emily needed to boost that self-esteem.
Here's a link to the article. Hope it works. She's just in the picture, but the rest of the article was about special olympics. I have to say that the
picture they chose to put in the newspaper was when Emily was getting overheated and very wobbly on her pony, Shamus. http://www.thesentinel.com/350281565479648.php She normally sits up very pretty. Here are a couple
pictures from the event.

OMG, those are wonderful pics, Kathy!!! Emily looks fantastic sitting on her horse! How incredibly exciting for all of you, especially Emily!!!
Emily sounds like she's really enjoying horseback riding and she's getting very good at it, too! I'm really glad that she's found something that she enjoys doing.

Thanks ladies. I do think Emily really is enjoying it. I wonder if she will ever be able to (or want to) compete against "average" kids. Not that it
matters. She's having a good time doing what she is doing.
Funny story about the event. Emily knew the photographer was following her around. So she is showing in the Dressage event, which is where they have to follow directions hollered by a caller. For example, "working trot from M to H". There are letters on the posts of the fence around the ring and she has to do what they tell her to do, from point to point. She really isn't very good at this. It's not her best event at all. So, she is in the middle of the event and she sees the photographer on the other side of the fence taking her picture. She stops the pony for a minute in the middle of the event, poses for the camera and then moves on. The Judges got the biggest kick out of that. Emily is certainly doing her own thing. Since the Judges know the kids all have their handicapps (big and small) they are very understanding and patient with them. It was so hot that day, I was afraid she was going to pass out on the horse. The newspaper article shows a picture of her getting pretty flaky and leaning over with that goofy smile on her face. It was from the heat, not the handicap. It made me laugh though.

Kathy, that was a great article and the pics are fantastic! Thanks for sharing. My daughter loves horses too, so they have that in common!

Oh, we are all about horses now at our house. She has a little Mini-Shamus that she plays with. We now have a Nintendo horse game. She's so funny! A year
ago, we had never even been face to face with a horse. Now we can tack one up and aren't afraid to clean up poo, although it is NOT one of my favorite
things to do. P-U

Thanks Sam. THe scrapbook is already in the works!
BTW, Shamus bit me on Wednesday! Turd muffin. I guess he was tired of being ridden. It didn't break the skin, but left a nice bruise. I did find out that I'm alergic to horses though. I started itching like crazy until I thoroughly washed my arm off. Same thing happens when my cats bite or scratch me, which fortunately isn't often.

Oh no! You got a "horsey bite!" Well, I'm a bit scared of horses. Probably cause I've never been around them.
Reminds me of the time our son was in kindergarten and we went as chaperones with his class to the state fair. We were in charge of a group of 4 or 5 of the kids. When we went into the petting zoo area, the little girl just clung to me and hung onto my leg, terrified of all the animals. I kept trying to reassure her and encourage her to pet the little critters. I was making progress with her when I was petting one of the baby goats and damned if he didn't bite my finger so hard I hollered! Tht little girl looked at me like "I told you so!" I haven't been to a petting zoo since. You better keep some benadryl handy when you go to the stables, just in case. I was watering plants in the yard last week and something bit me on the back of the leg. Well, I swatted at it and kept on watering but it start itching me all up and down my calf and was about to drive me nuts inside of 2 minutes. I ran inside and took benadryl and calmed right down. I don't know what that was. I was thinking Brown Recluse. |
